My favorite thing about my trip to Montreal was the food. You know me, so no surprise there! I prioritize experiencing cities through the local gastronomy. I went with my mom on our annual mami/hija trip. As soon as I started doing some research for this trip I knew exploring and discovering amazing food was bound to happen. Montreal has one of the highest amounts of restaurants per capita. Quantity doesn’t necessary mean quality, but luckily I can report no disappointments when it came to dining in Montreal.
LE VIN PAPILLON
This cozy and rustic-chic wine bar is a great way to start your trip right. Chef Marc-Olivier Frappier and Wine Director/Manager, Vanya Filipovic, have some really good going for at Le Vin Papillon.
Originally the plan was to go to Joe Beef, but it was too late to make a reservation. If it’s on your list I recommend you look into making a reservation at least 3 weeks in advance. When I called the hostess recommended we check their wine bar instead. And really I’m glad it worked out this way, because it was spectacular.
Come prepare for an experience. The wait can be a bit long, but so worth it. We started enjoying a bottle of vino by the bar until we got our table. Check out the slide above to see some of the dishes we got. The photos make them no justice! I can honestly say this was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Everything was so savory and delicately prepared.

Schwartz’s
The iconic Schwartz’s deli is an institution of the city of Montreal. It’s located in the Saint Laurent Boulevard and has been serving its memorable smoke meat at the same location for 80 years! So not only do you get to experience a great meal, you also step into the history of the neighborhood.

I kept things simple with a traditional smoke meat sandwich. The flavors were so rich and with just one bite you can tell they take their traditions and recipe very seriously. The meat is marinaded for 10 days with a secret blend of herbs and spices. Tres yumm! Do expect to wait in line out of the door, so dress for the weather.
And by the way, Celine Dion‘s late husband, René Angélil, was a co-owner of Schwartz’s. She made a surprise visit last August and bought lunch for her fans. So sweet.
The prices are quite reasonable, so keep on it your list when looking for a great meal and not breaking the bank while in Montreal.

Olive & Gourmando
This one was a big favorite spots for breakfast and lunch. In fact, we went there twice during our trip, because it was that good. It’s located right at the heart of Old Montreal and a perfect spot to take a break from touristy activities.
Olive and Gourmando’s menu includes great options for salads, sandwiches and soups, but perhaps the best part is their selection of pastries.Cookies and croissants galore! Look at that display :). Their coffee is also pretty good!

BIG IN JAPAN (The Bar)
Montreal has also a vibrant nightlife. We had some great cocktails at Big in Japan, a pretty sweet speakeasy at Saint Laurent Boulevard. To find this place you have to know what you’re looking for. There are no signs and nothings that indicates its location. Just a gray door near street corner.
They specialized in classic cocktails and their candlelit atmosphere makes it for a great spot to chill before you hit the dance floor elsewhere. You might just get in that kind of mood.

LA BANQUISE
This is a do-not-miss! I repeat, a do-not-miss spot. I never had poutine before visiting Canana and I have to admit I approached this one with some level of hesitation. The idea of cheese, gravy and fries just didn’t sound that appealing to me. But man, was I wrong. This traditional Canadian dish became my jam right away.

La Banquise is where you want to go for poutine. It’s all they serve. They also have a great selection of local beers, including their own brew.
LA LAVANDERIA
Who knew Montreal could be great for a good old parrillada. That’s exactly what we found at the Argentinian restaurant, La Lavanderia by Chef Antonio Park. I recommend la parrillada completa, which comes with a selection of grilled meats and seafood. For cocktail I recommend the bomba mate, made with vodka and yerba mate.
