Walking Through History in Cartagena

Cartagena is one of the most colorful cities in South America.  Walking around the walled old city during the day is a delight. The streets and plazas full of so much history and charm. During our recent visit to Cartagena we explored the city mostly at night.  We used the daytime to explore other destinations outside of Cartagena like Playa Blanca and the Totumo Volcan.  It wasn’t until our last day that we finally had a chance to leave the hotel early and walk around the magnificent streets of the Cartagena.  This post is a photo journal of our walk that morning.

One of the best places to go shopping for gifts, souvenirs and art is Las Bovedas.  This set of over 20 vaults were built during the colonial period for military purpose, such as storing weapons and provisions.  Today the space is use by local vendors and shops.  DSC02826_1

There are many other options where you can buy art or souvenirs, like this shop pictured below.

One of the most iconic sites of Cartagena is the Puerta de Reloj or the Clock Tower.  During the colonial times this used to be one of the main entry points into the walled city.

I especially loved the windows, balconies and the flower of the neighborhoods.  Every street in Cartagena seems to be more colorful than the one before.

This city has it all! And in fact I will be sharing more about my time there over the next few post. Have you been to Cartagena? Tell me about your experience in the comments below.

Hasta pronto,

Paloma
